We love being part of your event — the dancing, the laughter, the memories. But there's one moment during the night where we'll politely step back: when the DJ fires up the laser show. Here's the honest reason why, and how we work together to keep the fun going.
First - what exactly is in our booth?
Our booths are powered by Canon R100 and M100 mirrorless cameras. These aren't your average point-and-shoot. They're professional-grade mirrorless cameras, the kind photographers and videographers use for weddings and commercial shoots. Inside each one is a tiny but incredibly sensitive electronic sensor that captures every photo. That sensor is the heart of the camera, and it's also its most vulnerable part.
So what's the problem with lasers?
Think of your camera sensor like the retina at the back of your eye. Your eye can handle regular stage lighting, colored gels, even bright spotlights because that light is diffused and spread across a wide area. But if someone pointed a laser pointer directly into your eye, even for a split second, it could cause real, permanent damage. The camera sensor works the same way.
A DJ laser isn't like a regular light. It concentrates an enormous amount of energy into a single, razor-thin beam. When that beam sweeps across a room and happens to hit the camera lens, all of that energy gets focused directly onto the sensor kinda like using a magnifying glass to burn a leaf on a sunny day. The sensor can't "blink" or look away. It just absorbs the hit.
The result? A laser strike can burn out individual pixels on the sensor, leaving permanent dead spots on every photo taken after that moment. In serious cases, it can destroy the sensor entirely meaning the camera stops working on the spot, mid-event, with no fix until the unit is sent in for repair or replacement.
Mirrorless cameras like our Canons are especially at risk compared to older DSLR-style cameras because they don't have a mirror shutter sitting in front of the sensor. The sensor is essentially exposed and "live" at all times while the camera is in use which is exactly what makes them so fast and great at capturing photos, but also what makes them more vulnerable to direct laser exposure.
Why we can't just "be careful"
We wish it were as simple as dodging beams. But DJ laser systems sweep, rotate, and scatter across the room in patterns that are fast and unpredictable often dozens of times per second. Even an experienced operator can't react quickly enough to shield the lens every time. And because the damage is cumulative, even several near-misses can degrade sensor quality over time.
The risk isn't theoretical. Camera sensor damage from lasers at events is a well-documented issue in the photography industry. Repair costs can run into the hundreds to thousands of dollars per camera body, and during repair time, that camera is completely out of service.
What this means for your event
When the laser show begins, we'll power down or cover the booth cameras until the lasers are off. We know this isn't ideal since laser moments are often peak-energy dance floor moments, and we genuinely want to be capturing them with you. Here's how we handle it so you lose as little as possible:
How we keep the booth running
- We coordinate with your DJ in advance. If we know the laser set is scheduled (e.g. during a specific song or finale), we can plan breaks and resume immediately after.
We use a "booth intermission" frame.
- We can display a fun branded screen on the booth monitor during the pause so guests know we'll be back in moments. We also refer to this as our idle time.
We stay at the booth.
- The moment lasers go off, we're back up and running — no waiting, no long gaps.
We adjust booth positioning.
- If the laser rig is directional and aimed away from where the booth is placed, we can sometimes continue operating. We'll assess this on-site.
We recommend a dedicated laser-free window.
- Scheduling laser effects for one or two specific moments (like a countdown or big reveal) rather than running them all night gives everyone — guests and equipment — the best of both worlds.
A note to clients booking both a DJ laser show and a photo booth
We love working alongside incredible DJs and production teams. Lasers, fog machines, and light shows make events magical, and we're here for all of it. The only ask is a little coordination: let us know about the laser setup ahead of time, and we'll build a plan together so the booth has maximum uptime all night.
Our cameras are our tools and your guarantee of quality. Protecting them means we can keep delivering sharp, vivid, professional photos — not just for your event, but for every event after yours too.
And all this said, your photographers will also share the same concern since they have even more robust mirrorless cameras (DLSM).
